Soi Dog Foundation’s sanctuary in Phuket includes state-of-the-art dog and cat hospitals. The former being the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia dedicated to the treatment of stray dogs.
The hospitals are staffed 24 hours-a-day, enabling the highest quality and continuity of care throughout the duration of a patient's stay, and see an average monthly intake of between 350 and 400 patients requiring a variety of different treatments. Post treatment, most of the animals will be returned to the area they were picked up from.
Some, though, will stay at the sanctuary if it is deemed unsafe for them to be returned to their area. Depending on their medical and behavioural status, many will then join the Soi Dog adoption programme.
Dog Hospital - Phuket
The dog hospital opened in September 2016 and replaced a smaller, less equipped building which dated back to 2008 when Soi Dog first established the sanctuary in Mai Khao, Phuket. The hospital is furnished with the most advanced equipment of any such facility in the region. It provides our veterinary team with the greatest possible chance of saving lives and offers a high-quality environment to animals in critical need of care.
X-ray and ultrasound machines allow for early and accurate diagnosis of conditions and the laboratory enables speedy analysis of blood and skin samples to help determine the required course of treatment as early as possible. The hospital is also equipped with a physio room and hydrotherapy pool, focusing on the rehabilitation of dogs with the most severe orthopaedic injuries, as well as providing pain-reduced therapy.
The hospital accommodates around 170 cases simultaneously and is rarely not operating at full capacity.
Cat Hospital - Phuket
Opened in late 2019, our cat hospital is devoted to providing medical treatment for stray cats.
It has a surgical theatre, dental suite, an intensive care room and non-infectious and infectious wards to facilitate the isolating of cats carrying contagious diseases. It has the capacity to provide care for 144 cats at any time.
Additionally, it is equipped with a state-of-the-art ultrasound machine which aids the early detection of serious internal issues, leading to even more accurate diagnoses and suitable treatment plans. The machine was very generously donated by supporters.
Over 3,000 stray cats are treated in the hospital every year.
Clinic - Bangkok
In Bangkok, Soi Dog operates a small clinic. This serves as the hub for the Bangkok arm of our CNVR programme (Catch | Neuter | Vaccinate | Return). However, our veterinary team there also accept between 200 and 300 treatment cases each year, often animals that have been rescued during our routine CNVR rounds in the city.
