About adopting overseas
Please select your country of residence below to find out more about transportation options.
Adopting to the USA is a simple process, and Soi Dog takes care of everything. We charge no adoption fee; adopters simply need to cover the cost of the travel crate, rabies titer test and transport.
Rabies Titer Test
The first step is for the dog to undergo a rabies titer test (RTT) – a blood sample that checks they have developed sufficient rabies antibodies. Assuming they pass, they can travel 28 days after the sample was taken, without undergoing quarantine.
Transport
There are two great options to get your new family member to the USA:
- As accompanied baggage with a flight buddy. When flight buddies are available to bring your dog to the USA, the cost is very reasonable for the distance travelled – between USD $1,300-$2,700.
- As manifested cargo. The more direct option is to travel as manifested cargo. While the cost is greater – between USD $2,500-$4,800 – the advantage is that your dog can travel to you quickly and at your convenience.
Arrival
There are only six CDC-approved airports that dogs can fly into: Atlanta (ATL), Los Angeles (LAX), Miami (MIA), New York (JFK), Philadelphia (PHL) and Washington DC (IAD). If you do not live close to any of these airports, don’t worry! Domestic travel within the USA can be arranged to get your dog home to you.
On arrival, your dog must undergo mandatory inspection and vaccination at a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-designated facility.
Unfortunately, we are unable to adopt dogs to Canada at this time due to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) measure prohibiting the entry of commercial dogs from countries at high-risk for dog rabies, implemented on September 28, 2022.

Cats are exempt from the ban. You can continue to register enquiries for cats by emailing adoptions@soidog.org
Adopting to Europe is a simple process, and Soi Dog takes care of everything.
Assuming they pass, they can travel 3 months after the sample was taken, without undergoing quarantine.
Transport
There are two great options to get your new family member to Europe:
- As accompanied baggage with a flight buddy. When flight buddies are available to bring your dog to the USA, the cost is very reasonable for the distance travelled – between EUR €400- €1,300.
- As manifested cargo. The more direct option is to travel as manifested cargo. While the cost is greater – between EUR €1,500-€3,300 – the advantage is that your dog can travel to you quickly and at your convenience. Note: Not all cities accept live cargo, so should you choose this option, we will establish the nearest airport that is available for your dog to travel to.
Adopting to the UK is a simple process, and Soi Dog takes care of everything.
Assuming they pass, they can travel 3 months after the sample was taken, without undergoing quarantine.
Transport
There are two great options to get your new family member to the UK:
- As accompanied baggage with a flight buddy (via Europe): When flight buddies are available to bring your dog to the UK, the cost is very reasonable for the distance travelled – currently capped at GBP £800. However, you must wait for a group of 4-5 dogs to be available to travel together. Due to UK regulations on importing dogs from Thailand, the dogs must first be flown to a European country (e.g. the Netherlands or Belgium) and then transported to the UK by a trusted pet courier to a designated location, where you can collect them.
- As manifested cargo. The more direct option is to travel as manifested cargo. While the cost is greater – between GBP £2,000-£3,000 – the advantage is that your dog can travel to you quickly and at your convenience. Your dog can be flown directly to Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Denmark, Sweden and Finland
Adopting to Denmark, Sweden and Finland is a slightly more complicated process, but Soi Dog will support you through each step.
Assuming they pass, they can travel 3 months after the sample was taken, without undergoing quarantine.
TransportAnimals are only able to travel to Denmark, Sweden and Finland if accompanied by their owner.
Therefore, the only option is for owners to fly to Thailand to collect their pet and then travel back with them as accompanied baggage. The estimated cost is between EUR €700-€2,000.
If you would like to learn more about this process, please email adoptions@soidog.org
Norway
Adopting to Norway is a lengthy process which requires the adopter to travel to Thailand to meet the dog at the start of the adoption process and again to accompany them home at the end of the adoption process.
We charge no adoption fee; adopters simply need to cover the cost of the travel crate, rabies titer test and transport, the estimated cost for which is between EUR €700- €2,000.

Iceland
- Unfortunately, we are not able to adopt to Iceland as Thailand is not an approved export country when it comes to importing animals there.
Australia
Unfortunately, there are no current travel options available for us to fly animals into Australia. The non-approved via Group 2 or 3 country pathway – which was previously used to transport animals from Thailand to Australia – is no longer viable as of March 1, 2023.
New Zealand
Unfortunately, we do not adopt to New Zealand. Thailand is not an approved export country when it comes to importing animals into New Zealand. As a result, the process is long and expensive, involving months in a quarantine facility. Since our dogs have already been through a lot during their lives, we do not believe it would be fair to put them through this extensive process.
Adopting within Thailand is a very simple process. Soi Dog takes care of everything and charges no adoption fee.
For expat adopters, we are also able to assist with travel arrangements should you decide to leave Thailand.
To start the process, please email our adoptions team at adoptions@soidog.org or message via Line @adoptionth
Adopting to Singapore is a lengthy process, but Soi Dog will support you through each step. We charge no adoption fee; however, adopters will need to cover the cost of the travel crate, rabies titer test, transport, quarantine process, import permits and license and any additional costs incurred in Singapore.
Note: There are restrictions on breeds and the maximum number of animals per household depending on the type of building you live in.
Rabies Titer Test
The first step is for the dog to undergo a rabies titer test (RTT) – a blood sample that checks they have developed sufficient rabies antibodies. Assuming they pass, they can travel 90 days after the sample was taken.
The dog must receive pre-arrival approval from the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) at least 30 days prior to arrival.
Transport
There is only one option to get your new family member to Singapore: as accompanied baggage with a flight buddy. When flight buddies are available to bring your dog to Singapore, the estimated cost is between SIN $2,100-$3,600.

Unfortunately, adopting to all countries in the world is not possible.
The process of importing a dog or cat into certain countries can be logistically challenging and expensive. In addition, some countries have lengthy quarantine restrictions which can be a stressful process for the animal and therefore not in the best interests of their welfare.
If you would like more specific information about adopting to your country and what restrictions may be in place, please email adoptions@soidog.org. Otherwise, please consider adopting a dog or cat from a local rescue.
